United Nations Ends Sanctions on Syrian President Prior to White House Visit
Security Council representatives approved to a US resolution removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his Washington trip the following week.
He was appointed interim leader after leading a rebel offensive that removed the former president in winter 2024, bringing to a close over a decade of civil war.
Washington's ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a strong political signal" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.
Sharaa was under global penalties in his role as head of the Muslim faction the HTS movement, previously associated with the extremist organization. Washington eliminated HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations this past July.
More Penalties Removed
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.
The Syrian diplomatic chief expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the penalties, posting on social media: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and supportive states for assisting the country and its population."
Upcoming White House Meeting
Sharaa's White House visit at the start of the week follows American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa had made "good progress" working toward stability to the conflict-ravaged nation.
The two leaders convened initially in May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of Arab nations.
Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" with a "very strong past".
His Islamist group HTS served as al-Qaeda's branch within Syria prior to breaking relations during 2016.
Earlier American Trip
The upcoming meeting does not represent the president's debut journey to the United States during this period. In September, he became the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the United Nations gathering in Manhattan after approximately sixty years.
Throughout his presentation, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position across international circles" and demonstrated unity with the people of Gaza.
