United Kingdom Extends Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Advisory List with Eleven Nations

The UK Foreign Office has placed 11 more countries to its public warning list regarding the dangers of toxic alcohol toxicity from adulterated spirits.

This expanded warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "an international surge in the frequency of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Only recently, officials had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, after a number of notable incidents including the fatal loss of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that even minimal doses of industrial alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or death within 12 to 48 hrs.

What is Methanol and How is it Used?

Toxic alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol typically employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. This chemical is not designed for drinking.

Although it is inherently formed during the manufacture of beverages, commercial firms reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the refining procedure.

But in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to save money, and as it is tasteless and smell-free, it is very difficult to detect.

Government Advice for Tourists

Foreign Office representative the minister said that each tourist should be aware of the signs of methanol poisoning.

"While consuming alcohol overseas, choose well-known venues and avoid local brews or unspecified beverages," Falconer said.

"If something appears suspicious, such as a headache that's much more severe than normal or vision problems – get medical help right away."

The full register of nations listed as posing a risk of methanol toxicity currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
