The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
